On Friday, July 24, 2026, LeBron James announced that he had chosen the Philadelphia 76ers for the final chapter of his career.  Just one week earlier, Christopher Nolan’s The Odyssey had opened theatrically after an acclaimed July 6 London premiere. At the time of LeBron’s announcement, the film was already a cultural phenomenon, earning rave critical and audience responses and a massive $264 million global opening. 

This satire turns LeBron into a modern Odysseus—the conquering hero whose Philadelphia uniform and sword represent a new trend of dominant news—while the grotesque MAGA Cyclops (Cyclops was a striking character in The Odyssey)  beneath him embodies a Trump-centered political news cycle that had consumed the national consciousness. Cyclops' sword, marked “DESTROY IRAN,” connects that figure to a senseless war which had vanquished political news. 

Yet, for a remarkable cultural moment, Americans became captivated by something else: an ancient hero reborn on movie screens, and a basketball legend choosing one final destination. The image captures a strange interruption in the national mood. Perhaps America simply needed a break from terror, war, and political dread—and, for a short moment, Odysseus and LeBron gave it one.

This image turns one of the strangest political reversals of the Trump era into a literal journey to hell. In December 2015, Lindsey Graham famously declared, “You know how you make America great again? Tell Donald Trump to go to hell,” while condemning Trump as a “race-baiting, xenophobic, religious bigot.”  Graham continued attacking Trump through the 2016 campaign, warning that Republicans would be “destroyed” if they nominated him. Yet after Trump became president, Graham transformed from one of his fiercest Republican critics into one of his most recognizable allies. 

The satire takes Graham’s old command literally. MAGA supporters are already standing in line for hell, while Graham—having arrived first (perhaps after his passing on July 11, 2026)—eagerly waits for Donald Trump to join them. His absurd threat to “drop kick” Trump adds another layer to the joke: the old anti-Trump Graham appears to have suddenly reawakened only after both men have reached the destination he once prescribed. The image is ultimately about political surrender and irony—a politician who once warned his party where Trump would take it, then spent years walking alongside him in that very direction.
